Russian Art [EMIGRANT PUBLICATIONS] KIRIENKO Ivan (1881–1971) From Honour and Glory to the Baseness and Shame of February 1917. Memoirs. São Paulo, 1963. 216 pp., 1 ill. (portrait), publisher’s binding, 22.6×15.9 cm., in good condition, a rarity. In his book, General I.K. Kirienko asserts that, contrary to the prevailing view that the foundation of the Volunteer Army was laid by General M. Alekseev on 17 November 1917, he personally began its formation as early as 6 November 1917, when he arrived in Novocherkassk with 16 officers and 10 soldiers from the 1st St George’s Regiment, which he had formed back in August of that year in Kyiv. The book was met with hostility by the émigré community, which regarded it as ‘defaming the honourable memory of the White leaders’. These memoirs are all the more interesting because members of the Kornilov Association who disagreed with Kirienko, seeing the book as an insult to the memory of General L. Kornilov, boycotted it, meaning it never went on general sale.
