BULGAKOV Mikhail (1891-1940)
Notes of a Young Doctor [Text]: Short stories. Library of the magazine "Ogonek" No. 23, published by Pravda, Moscow, 1963. 56 pp., publisher’s binding, 17 x 12 cm., general condition (traces of damp on the cover).
“Notes of a Young Doctor” is a cycle of short stories by M. A. Bulgakov, published in 1925–1926 in the magazines “Medical Worker” and “Red Panorama”. The cycle includes the stories ‘The Towel with the Rooster’, ‘The Steel Throat’, ‘Baptism by Turn’, ‘The Blizzard’, ‘Egyptian Darkness’, ‘The Missing Eye’ and ‘Star Rash’. The six stories preserved in the writer’s archive were first published as a cycle in 1963 (Ogonyok Library, No. 23). The seventh story, “Star Rash”, was discovered and published only in 1981 by the literary scholar Lydia Yanovskaya. In the 1963 publication, the title “The Steel Throat” was changed to “The Silver Throat”, and there were distortions of the text and omissions. The dating of the events was also altered: instead of Bulgakov’s 1917, 1916 appeared throughout. This was probably done due to censorship and the publishers’ desire to bring the time of the stories’ action closer to the time when Bulgakov himself worked in the village of Nikolskoye, where he held the post of district doctor.
