A rare Imperial Navy officer’s dagger awarded ‘for bravery’, the gilt-bronze pommel featuring a fluted spire surmounted by a cross of the Order of St George with polychrome enamelled decoration (chips and losses), the ‘S’-shaped guard engraved in Cyrillic with ‘For Bravery’, the heel of the blade is fitted with a gilded bronze escutcheon inlaid with a cross of the Order of Saint Anne, 4th class, with red enamelled decoration and surrounded by the inscription ‘For Bravery’ Enamelled Saint George, the steel blade engraved on one side with the Cyrillic inscription ‘21 February 1916’, with its scabbard covered in black leather and gilded bronze fittings engraved with laurel leaves. It features the Cross of the Order of St George on the pommel—the emblem of the Empire’s most prestigious military decoration—as well as the insignia of the Order of St Anne, 4th class, affixed to a shield at the heel of the blade. This combination illustrates the tradition of Russian ceremonial weapons, which brought together the emblems of the imperial military orders on a single weapon. Naval daggers of this type, produced in very small numbers and generally made to individual order, are among the rarest and most sought-after Russian bladed weapons.
