ORDER OF SAINT ANDREW THE FIRST-CALLED
Fragment of a necklace from the Order of Saint Andrew, in gold (750 parts per thousand) and polychrome enamels, comprising five elements linked by chains:
- a double-headed imperial eagle, enamelled black, centred on a shield depicting Saint George slaying the dragon in gold against a red enamelled background (H. 4.5 x W. 4.3 cm).
- two military trophies, each centred on the monogram of Tsar Peter the Great against a background of suspended flags enamelled in green and white (H. 4.5 x W. 4.5 cm).
- two round medallions crossed by a blue-enamelled St Andrew’s Cross and centred on the inscription ‘SARP’ for ‘Sanctus Andreas Russiae Patronus’ on a red-enamelled background (Diameter 3.5 cm).
Russia, probably Saint Petersburg, late 18th – early 19th century.
