ORDER OF SAINT ANNE Cross of the Order of Saint Anne, 1st class, in gold (750 parts per thousand) and silver of the ‘Pavlovsky’ type, featuring at its centre a painted oval medallion depicting Saint Anne, fully enamelled, from which extend four red glass arms surrounded by engraved and openwork gold foliage, set at their centres with four teardrop-shaped rhinestones, the tips of the arms set with twelve round rhinestones. The reverse is of solid, domed gold, the centre decorated with the crowned monogram of Saint Anne painted on enamel. Some oxidation, a small crack in the enamel on the reverse, slight knocks. With a period tie ribbon. St Petersburg, reign of Alexander I, 1801–1815. No silversmith’s hallmark. H. 8 x W. 7 cm. Gross weight: 50.1 g. Related work An almost identical cross, bearing the hallmark of the silversmith Afanasy Panov, sold at Millon, Drouot, 11 December 2023, lot 202 (sold for €32,500). History Although unhallmarked, our cross can be attributed to the silversmith Afanasy Panov, a supplier to the Russian orders of chivalry, whose pieces are not always marked and whose hallmark was, until recently, still unknown. A true master of gold and enamel work, he delivered, according to the records, 2,897 First Class Crosses of St Anne (of the 1797 model), of which our cross is likely one. This insignia is an extremely rare example of the system for awarding orders in the early 19th century under Tsar Alexander I (1801–1825). Indeed, following the death of a holder of the order, and until 1857, insignia had to be returned to the Chapter of Orders, where they were either sent for repair or melted down into gold ingots, which explains the great rarity of the cross we are presenting here.
