ORDER OF SAINT ANNE Cross of the Order of Saint Anne, 2nd class, awarded in a civilian capacity, in gold (56 zolotniks, 583 thousandths) and silver (800 thousandths), the centre enamelled in polychrome, the arms decorated with translucent red enamel on a guilloché background of barley grains, the centre, the loop and the elements between the arms set with old-cut diamonds and rose-cut diamonds. With a tie ribbon. Good overall condition. Saint Petersburg, 1908–1917. Goldsmith: Carl BLANK (1857–1923). Length: 5 cm. Gross weight: 37.0 g. History Established on 14 February 1735 by Duke Charles Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp, in honour of his wife Anna Petrovna, daughter of Tsar Peter the Great, the Order of St Anne was incorporated into the Russian system in 1797 by Tsar Paul I. From 1815 onwards, it was divided into four classes. The crosses of the 1st and 2nd classes could be freely adorned with diamonds; from 1829 onwards, these were awarded only to foreigners.
