ORDER OF SAINT VLADIMIR Cross of the Order of Saint Vladimir for 25 years’ service, 4th class, in gold, 56 zolotniks (583 thousandths), flat arms enamelled in opaque black, inscribed on both horizontal arms of the obverse with ‘25 / лѣтъ’, the centre of the obverse enamelled in polychrome and gold, the reverse enamelled in black. With a modern ribbon on a cardboard backing. A few small chips on the arms, but a rare and fine specimen. Saint Petersburg, 1872–1899. Silversmith’s mark partly illegible. L. 3.9 cm. Gross weight: 12.9 g. History In the 19th century, the first maker of St Vladimir’s Crosses for the Chapter of the Order, from 1802 onwards, was Pierre-Etienne Teremen (1764–1848), who produced 4 insignia of the 1st class and 9 insignia of the 3rd and 4th classes. Between 1802 and 1820, Panov produced 338 insignia of the Order of St Vladimir of the 1st and 2nd classes and repaired 213, as well as 10,097 insignia of the 3rd and 4th classes. The goldsmith Immanuel-Georges Pannash (1773–1844) produced, between 1820 and 1836, approximately 500 insignia of the 1st and 2nd classes and approximately 13,000 insignia of the 3rd and 4th classes. Suppliers to the chapter between 1836 and 1854 were the jeweller Johann-Wilhelm Keibel (1788–1862) and Heinrich-Wilhelm Kemmerer (1786–1854) produced around 100 first-class crosses and around 600 second-class crosses, around 4,000 third-class crosses, and over 12,000 fourth-class crosses. Keibel also supplied the crosses for 25, 20 and 18 years’ service in the officer ranks, and between 1854 and 1862 produced around 120 first-class crosses and around 8,000 fourth-class crosses. His son Julius Keibel (1825–1882) produced, between 1862 and 1882, around 250 first-class crosses and around 30,000 fourth-class crosses. The son of Julius and grandson of I.-W. Keibel, Albert Keibel (1854–1910) produced, between 1882 and 1905, approximately 300 Crosses of the Order of St Vladimir, 1st class, and approximately 60,000 Crosses of the 4th class.
