Description
Gold St George’s Medal “For Bravery”, 2nd class. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Nicholas II; the reverse bears the Russian inscription “за храбрость” along with the number 2864 and the distinction “2 СТЕП”. Slight wear but in good overall condition. With an attached ribbon in the colours of the Order. Russia, 1914–1917. Diameter: 2.9 cm. Gross weight: 24.3 g. History On 28 April 1895, the Imperial Government approved the ‘For Bravery’ medals ’ with a new reverse design (designed by A.F. Vasyutinsky). As before, they were intended for residents of the Empire’s border regions, as well as for those who had distinguished themselves through acts of heroism during expeditions and wars. After 1905, these medals were also awarded to non-commissioned officers and police officers for their role in suppressing the revolutionary movement. In accordance with the statutes of 1913, the four classes of the ‘For Bravery’ medal, together with the new charter, were incorporated into the Order of St George and became known as the St George’s Medals. The numbering of the medals was reset to zero, with each class starting with the number 1. From late 1916, the medals began to be made from a bronze-nickel alloy. Between 1914 and 1917, 52,515 second-class medals were struck at the Petrograd Mint. Following the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II, Saint George began to be depicted on the obverse.
