A vermeil token (875 parts per thousand) of the Imperial Society of Lovers of the Natural Sciences, Anthropology and Ethnography, founded in 1863 (“Imperial” from 1879), hinged, with polychrome champlevé enamelled decoration; the obverse depicts an allegory of Europe and the date ‘1879’, the reverse depicting allegories of the four other continents in medallions; the interior enamelled with the name of the recipient, the zoologist Alexandre Andreïevich Tikhomirov (1850–1931), beneath a marquis’s crown. Moscow, after 1879 (circa 1900). No visible hallmark. H. 5.2 x W. 2.8 cm. Gross weight: 30.9 g.
