Volumes richly illustrated with portraits, facsimiles and inset plates; one volume contains an illustrated title page drawn by the military painter Nicolas Samokish. Black full-leather binding dating from after the original edition, likely commissioned for a French-speaking owner: spine with faux raised bands decorated with gilt fillets and panels, gilt title in French: ‘THE CENTENARY OF THE MINISTRY OF WAR / THE EMPEROR’S HEADQUARTERS / RUSSIA’. Illegible library stamps. In-4 format (27 x 22 cm). Some scuffing to the joints; worn caps with a small loss of leather on the upper cap of one of the volumes; interior fresh. A reference work, published to mark the centenary of the Ministry of War of the Russian Empire, tracing the history of the Imperial General Headquarters and the Sovereign’s Entourage during the reigns of Alexander I and Nicholas I.
