Background Nikolai Antonovich Makhotin (1830–1903) was a Russian infantry general on the General Staff who took part in the Crimean War (1853–1856). He is also known for his writings, notably this Reference Manual for Russian Officers, first published in 1859 and very popular amongst officers.
