Description
Parade uniform of an officer (second captain) of the 4th Kharkov Lancers Regiment (4й Харковскiй Уланскiй полкъ), 1908 model. The tunic is made of blue woollen cloth with yellow piping; the front panel and sleeve facings are yellow with pointed ends, fastened with 2 x 7 gilded brass buttons bearing the imperial eagle, a stand-up collar embroidered with gold thread (oxidised), as are the columns on each sleeve and the gilded buttons; an attached fourragère cord with tassels; and a pair of epaulettes with metal scales. With a belt, a cartridge pouch strap with gold braid and gilt brass fittings, and a pair of trousers, probably added later, in blue with yellow piping. Signs of wear, damage and missing parts. Nicholas II period, 1908–1917. Bibliography Gérard Gorokhoff, Русская Императорская Кавалерия / The Russian Imperial Cavalry, 1881–1917. Moscow, 2008, pp. 213–215 (illustrated). History It will be recalled that in 1882, with the exception of the Guard, Alexander III had disbanded all the lancers’ and hussars’ regiments and converted them into dragoons. In 1908, following the disastrous war against Japan, Nicholas II re-established these regiments, which were issued with uniforms similar to those worn during the reign of Alexander II. In December 1907, following a 15-year interlude as the 11th Kharkov Dragoon Regiment, this corps reverted to the 4th Lancer Regiment and was issued with its new uniform from February 1908. The czapska, such as the one we are presenting in this sale, was not reintroduced until 1909.
