Description
A rare full dress uniform for a Lieutenant-General of the Infantry, 1908 model. The double-breasted tunic is made of ‘Tsar’s green’ woollen cloth with red piping, collar and lapels covered with gold embroidery (oxidised) featuring an oak leaf motif, lapel tabs with two visible gilded brass buttons bearing the imperial eagle, the third beneath the flap; infantry epaulettes with three stars, bearing the insignia of the 2nd St Petersburg Cadet Corps surmounted by that of the Kexholmsky Regiment in gilded bronze on the left, and that of the Nicholas General Staff Academy in silver on the right. The belt is missing. With a pair of attached trousers with raspberry-coloured piping (heavily holey). Wear, damage and missing parts. Nicholas II period, 1908–1917. Background In 1914, the corps of Russian generals held a prominent position in society. In addition to their military duties, generals held numerous civilian posts: from governors and senior civil servants right up to ministers. The 1914 directory of Russian generals lists 171 generals, 241 lieutenant-generals and 533 major-generals. The rank of major-general corresponds to that of brigadier-general in France (two stars in the Russian system). A lieutenant-general is a major-general (three stars). Until 1908, Russian generals wore their regiment’s uniform, distinguished only by the white plume on their hat. It was not until 26 January 1908 that a standard uniform for generals was adopted, such as the one shown here. Bibliography Alexis Stiopka, ‘Russian Generals in 1914’, article in *La Gazette des Uniformes*, pp. 23–26 (see illustration).
