Description
Major-General’s field coat, double-breasted in ‘protector’ wool cloth (brown) with red piping on the left side of the chest, featuring 2 × 6 gilded brass buttons bearing the imperial eagle, red collar tabs with two gilded buttons, two side pockets with piped flaps, gold shoulder tabs with broad chevrons featuring two stars and red piping. Signs of wear, damage and missing parts. Nicholas II era, 1914–1917. Bibliography G. Gorokhoff, ‘The Generals of the Imperial Russian Army, 1914–1917’ (article), Part 2, Militaria, no. 232, p. 30. It states that, whilst on campaign, generals, like other officers, were expected to wear the troops’ overcoat, or at least a coat made of the same fabric, so as not to be spotted by the enemy. This is the case with this general, who nevertheless retained his gold epaulettes and the red piping, trimmings and collar tabs.
