Cadet’s field uniform: he wears a khaki field jacket with five horn buttons and a straight, rounded collar, featuring two breast pockets, two waist pockets and a watch pocket. The standard personal kit for an officer (common 1912 model) is made of brown leather; it consists of a leather belt fastened with a single prong buckle, onto which a sword loop is fitted, a pair of shoulder straps crossing at the back, a whistle pouch attached to the left shoulder strap (not shown here), and a map and document pouch on the back (also not shown). A sabre scabbard is slung over the belt on the left-hand side, whilst the canvas binocular case is attached to the belt on the right-hand side alongside the pistol holster (marked on the inside ‘IV. Koristovitch’). Here, the revolver’s grip is positioned towards the rear, indicating that this officer is in the infantry. Its braided leather cord is attached to the left shoulder strap. The shoulder tabs, featuring two gold braids and a silver star, indicate the rank of ensign (прапорщик), the lowest officer rank. Generally, this entry-level rank was conferred upon those who had completed an eight-month fast-track training course at a military academy or one of the officer cadet schools established during the war.
