Description
Helmet belonging to a soldier of the 31st Alexopol Chasseurs (Infantry) Regiment, 1844 model, a memento of the Crimean War. The helmet is covered in black leather with gold trim throughout; the front plate features an imperial eagle set upon a peltum, centred with the number ‘31’ in silver-plated brass (for the regiment); the chinstraps have metal scales; the crest featuring a flaming grenade resting on a cruciform base with three rivets; visor and neck guard in black leather. Restoration and wear to the leather; minor imperfections. Reign of Nicholas I, 1844–1855. H. 35 x W. 18 x D. 29 cm. Bibliography Gérard Gorokhoff, ‘The Russian Model 1844 Helmet (2)’, p. 21 (illustrated), described as belonging to the 31st Line Infantry Regiment during the Crimean War; this regiment was in fact the 31st Alexopol Chasseurs Regiment (since 1833). It reverted to the Alexopol Infantry Regiment in 1856.
