Description
Parade helmet of the lower ranks of the Guard’s Mounted Grenadiers Regiment. Made of black leather, adorned with a stamped gilt-brass double-headed imperial eagle, to which is affixed a metal (unenamelled) plaque of the Order of St Andrew, surmounted by a gilt-brass scroll engraved with the inscription ‘За взятие город Врацы / 28 октября 1877 года’ (‘For the capture of the town of Vratsa, 28 October 1877’). With a black leather visor edged with gilded brass and a neck guard. Articulated chinstraps with domed scales attached to rosettes in the shape of flaming pomegranates; a metal cockade in black, orange and white on the right. Horsehair lining, possibly replaced. Signs of wear and scratches; the scarlet cloth pennant at the back is missing. AT hallmark within a heart on the chin strap. Reign of Nicholas II, 1909–1917. H. 24 x W. 19 x D. 27 cm.
