Description
Parade helmet of the Knights-Guards of Her Majesty the Empress and the Cuirassiers of His Majesty the Emperor, 1878 model. The helmet is made of gilded brass, crowned with the double-headed imperial eagle in silver-plated brass fixed to its mount by four rivets; the chinstraps are of the same metal, with silver-plated scales on a leather core, a lower-rank cockade on the right painted in white, orange and black; the gilded brass visor, edged with silver-plated brass, is surmounted in the centre by a St Andrew’s cross in silver-plated metal with polychrome enamel (needs reattaching). Part of the inner lining is missing; wear to the inner leather. The eagle is original but oxidised; its base is numbered 697. Damage to the neck strap. Reign of Nicholas II. H. 37 x W. 30.5 x D. 18.5 cm. History The cuirassiers’ uniform was characterised by the famous helmet worn with the eagle on certain occasions: primarily during parades in the presence of the Emperor, whilst on guard duty at the palace, off duty, and in full dress uniform. The eagle of the Knights-Guards of Her Majesty the Empress and of the Cuirassiers of His Majesty the Emperor was silver, whilst that of the Mounted Guards and the Cuirassiers of Her Majesty the Empress was gold.
