Description
1862-model kepi for cadets and soldiers, made of black woollen cloth with a red band from the Constantin Military School, adorned with a gilded brass front plate of the Military Education Corps, a white-orange-black cord along the edge of the upper crown, a patent-leather visor, and a black leather chin strap with simple metal buttons. Russia, 1862–1882. H. 13.5 x W. 15 x D. 23 cm. History The French-style kepi was adopted in 1862 and, for several units, replaced the helmet and cap. It remained in use until 1882, though many units had abandoned it before then. The red headband and the Military Education badge suggest the Constantine Military School. A black horsehair plume is missing for both cadets and enlisted men. According to Zweguintzow in 1863, the kepi was to have been fitted, for all schools, with a badge featuring the ‘Line Eagle with a grenade and no number’, but for the Constantin Military School, this is by no means certain.
