Description
Parade cap for a musician in the Finlandsky Guard Regiment, 1907 model. The body is covered in black woollen cloth with red piping; the front panel is black leather; the upper edge is trimmed with yellow woollen braid; the chinstraps feature gilded brass scales held in place by a rosette, gilded buttons bearing the Imperial Eagle (the ‘étichket’ is missing), visor in black patent leather edged with gilded brass, a regimental St Andrew’s front plate in silver-plated metal with polychrome enamel, surmounted by an applied gilt brass scroll bearing the inscription in Cyrillic: ‘За Филиппополь 4 Января 1878 года ” (“For Philippopolis (Plovdiv), 4 January 1878”). This banner of distinction, awarded following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, is in fact that of the 3rd Battery of the Guard Horse Artillery, which bore the same distinction as the Litovsky Guard Regiment but in gilded metal; whilst that of the Finlandsky bore the date 5 January 1878, not 4 as here.
