Description
A bicorne hat worn by a chamberlain or a dignitary of the Imperial Court, 1855 model. Made of black felt edged with a wide, serrated gold braid, it is adorned with an officer’s cockade embroidered in white, orange and black, surmounted by a double-twisted gold cannetille braid held in place by a gilded brass button bearing the imperial eagle; it is topped with a plume of black ostrich feathers and black silk tassels edged with gold braid. The interior is lined with a white leather cap and a white moiré lining bearing the gold stamp of the hatmaker L. Bruno in Saint Petersburg and the letter ‘T’ beneath the princely crown of the Holy Roman Empire. It is accompanied by two spare buttons, attached on the inside to the silk cap. Russia, late 19th – early 20th century. H. 18 x W. 14.5 x D. 43 cm.
