Cap of the Dagestan Cavalry Regiment, the crown in brown woollen cloth, edged with white piping around the rim; the headband in white woollen cloth; the peak in black patent leather, with a silver and gold metal cockade, enamelled black, mounted on a metal rosette. Reign of Nicholas II, 1907–1914. Manufacturer’s stamp in Saint Petersburg (difficult to read), supplier to the Imperial Court, with various later stamps. H. 11 x D. 17 (inside) 17 cm. History The fascinating Dagestan Cavalry Regiment (Дагестанский конный полк) was not a ‘European’ cavalry regiment, unlike the lancers, hussars or dragoons; it retained a strong Caucasian and Muslim character. The regiment was formed in the mid-19th century following the conquest of the Caucasus. It was composed of Dagestani volunteers: Avars, Dargins, Kumyks, Lezgins, Lakhs, Tabassaran and other mountain peoples. Like other mountain peoples of the Caucasus, they were generally exempt from compulsory military service but could enlist voluntarily; in this way, the imperial government sought to integrate the warrior elites of Dagestan whilst respecting their traditions. On 9 April 1904, during the Russo-Japanese War, Nicholas II authorised the formation of a regiment of Dagestan horsemen intended to serve in the Far East as part of the regular cavalry. Volunteers flocked to join, a testament to the unit’s prestige amongst the mountain peoples. In 1914, a 2nd Dagestan Cavalry Regiment was formed to join the new Indigenous Caucasian Cavalry Division, better known as the ‘Wild Division’ (Дикая дивизия). At the start of the war, it was commanded by Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, brother of Nicholas II.
