Description
Sailor’s cap with the St George’s ribbon from the destroyer “Le Courroucé”, made of black woollen cloth with white piping, featuring an enamelled metal sailor’s cockade, the silk ribbon in the colours of the Order of St George bearing the Cyrillic inscription ‘ГНѢВНЫЙ’ (GNEVNYÏ: Angry, Furious) in gold letters. Signs of wear. Russia, 1914–1917. H. 8.5 x D. 18.5 cm. History The destroyer (eskadrény minonosets) Gnevny, built for the Black Sea Fleet at the Nikolaev shipyard, was launched in 1913; it entered service in 1914 with the Imperial Russian Navy, and saw action during the First World War and subsequently in the Civil War.
