Description
A section of ribbon from the cap of the Russian Squadron in Bizerte, made of black silk taffeta, bearing the inscription ‘РУССКАЯ ЭСКАДРА’ in Cyrillic script in gold lettering in the centre. Wear and tears at the ends. Emigration, 1919–1933. H. 3 x W. 44 cm. History This name was given to Baron Wrangel’s ‘White’ Fleet in 1920, under the command of Admiral Kedrov, which facilitated the evacuation from the Crimea and eventually ended up in Bizerte (Tunisia). The vessels (more than 120 ships) were interned at Bizerte flying the flag of Imperial Russia, with the crews continuing to live according to the traditions of the former Imperial Russian Navy. In this context, many sailors no longer wore the name of a specific ship, but a common ribbon bearing the name ‘Russian Squadron’.
