Description
Cap band from the armoured cruiser “Askold” made of black silk taffeta, bearing the inscription “Аскольдъ” in Cyrillic in gold lettering at the centre, with gold anchor motifs at the ends. Good condition. Russia, early 20th century. H. 3 x W. 143 cm. INCLUDED is a section of ribbon bearing the name of the same ship, which is torn and incomplete. H. 3 x W. 36 cm. These two ribbons belonged to sailors on the 1st-class armoured cruiser Askold, based at Port Arthur as part of the 1st Pacific Squadron. Construction began in 1898, and the ship was officially launched in 1900. The cruiser distinguished itself during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904, and later during the First World War, when, alongside British forces, it operated in the Mediterranean off the Turkish coast: it distinguished itself during the Battle of the Dardanelles in 1915. Retained by the White Army, it fought against the Bolsheviks before falling into their hands in 1918. It was scrapped in 1922.
