Description
Cap band from the “Crocodile” submarine of the Caïman class, made of black silk taffeta, bearing the inscription “крокодиль” in Cyrillic in gold lettering at the centre, with gold anchor motifs at each end. Russia, late 19th – early 20th centuries. H. 3.5 x W. 138.5 cm. History The Caïman class comprised four submarines commissioned for the Imperial Russian Navy during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. Commissioned from 1911 onwards and assigned to the Baltic Fleet, they were tasked with carrying out attacks on German warships and, later, merchant vessels during the First World War. They were scuttled in 1918 to prevent their capture by German forces.
