Description
A section of cap ribbon, probably from the destroyer “Solide”, made of black silk taffeta, bearing the inscription “Крѣпкiй” (Крепкий: strong, tenacious) in Cyrillic in gold lettering in the centre. Signs of wear and missing sections at the ends. Russia, early 20th century. H. 3.3 x W. 50 cm. History There was a gunboat of this name in the mid-19th century, which served mainly in Russian coastal waters. At that time, the Russian navy favoured naming small vessels after military virtues: Смелый (Fearless), Храбрый (Brave), Крепкий (Strong), Стойкий (Steadfast). A destroyer of the same name (1905–1925) is the most likely candidate for our ribbon: built in France at the Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée shipyard (La Seyne-sur-Mer). It was launched on 24 August 1905, commissioned in 1906 and belonged to the “Lieutenant Bourakov” class; it was intended to escort the battleships of the Baltic Fleet. During the First World War, it took part in patrols in the Gulf of Finland, escort duties, mine-laying operations and the fight against German submarines. Unlike many Russian destroyers, it survived the entire war. It was renamed in 1922 and became a training ship under the name Рошаль in honour of the revolutionary Grigori Roshal; it was scrapped around 1925.
