Description
St George’s Cap Ribbon bearing the name of the armoured cruiser “Varyag”, made of silk with fine orange and black stripes, bearing the name of the cruiser “Варягь” in Cyrillic script in gold lettering at the centre, with gold anchor motifs at each end. Modern collector’s replica. H. 3.5 x W. 139 cm. History Built at the Philadelphia shipyards between 1898 and 1899, this armoured cruiser was transferred to the Russian Navy and entered service in 1901. Based at Port Arthur, it was part of the Russian Navy’s 1st Pacific Squadron and, due to its home port, played an active role in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. Following the Battle of Chemulpo, the damage was so extensive that it was decided to scuttle the ship: it was flooded in February 1904.
