A rare mitre plate for a Holstein artillery soldier, Model 1756, bearing the cipher of Tsar Peter III surmounted by the Imperial Eagle of Russia. Made of repoussé silver-plated copper. Minor knocks and areas where the silver plating is missing. Russia, 18th century, circa 1762. H. 23.5 x W. 23.5 cm. History The reign of Emperor Peter III, born Karl Peter Ulrich of Holstein-Gottorp (1728–1762), lasted only six months, from 25 December 1761 to 28 June 1762. This mitre plate, modelled on the 1756 design from the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp, features the Russian emblems and can therefore be dated to 1762, the mitre originally rested on a fabric-covered frame and featured a richly decorated metal front plate bearing the imperial double-headed eagle and the simple Latin letter ‘P’ for Peter III. It was crafted with particular care, featuring trophy flags, lion’s heads and flaming grenades along the border, with highly detailed relief work, making it a remarkable ceremonial piece. The reform was, however, abandoned following the overthrow of Peter III by Catherine II in 1762, who reinstated the old uniforms and headgear. Very few of these mitres were produced (a few hundred at most), which explains why these original front plates from the era of Peter III are now extremely rare.
