Description
Grenadier cap badge, Model 1802. Made of stamped copper, depicting the Russian imperial eagle surmounted by the motto in Cyrillic “СЬ НАМИ БОГЬ” (God is with us). Minor knocks. Russia, 19th century. H. 28.5 cm. History The Pavlovsky Regiment is the only regiment in the Russian army to have retained the archaic element of early 19th-century uniform into the early 20th century – large cloth grenadier and fusilier hats with a copper plate. These hats became a symbol of the regiment’s military distinction in the battles of Preisch-Eilau and Friedland in 1807. The supreme decree stated: “In honour of this regiment, we order that the caps now be retained by it in the same form as when they left the battlefield, even if some of them have been damaged. May they serve as an eternal monument to its outstanding bravery and the monarch’s favour towards it.”
