Description
A rare officer’s cartridge belt (lyadunka) from the 13th Dragoon Regiment of the Military Order (successor to the Cuirassier Regiment of the Military Order), Model 1889, made of black leather over a zinc sheet core, with a gold-coloured braided border; the clamshell-shaped lid is silver-plated, featuring a gilt bronze plaque of the Order of St George with polychrome enamel; the underside of the lid is lined with black velvet. Signs of wear and impact. Russia, second half of the 19th century. Hallmark ‘NSVK’ for ‘high-quality silver-plated’. H. 9 x W. 17 cm. History This exceptional regiment changed its name several times throughout its history. Founded in 1709 as a dragoon regiment, under Catherine II it was granted the exceptional privilege of bearing the insignia of the Order of St George and became the famous Regiment of the Military Order (Военного Ордена). During the reorganisation of the cavalry in 1860, it became the Cuirassier Regiment of the Military Order (Кирасирский Военного Ордена полк). In 1882, Alexander III disbanded virtually all line cuirassier regiments and converted them into dragoon regiments. The regiment then became the 13th Dragoon Regiment of the Military Order.
