RARE OFFICER’S SABRE QUIVER FROM THE HUSSARS OF HIS MAJESTY TSAR NICHOLAS II’S GUARD REGIMENT Sabretache in red waxed leather, with a flap covered in crimson cloth, adorned in the centre with the monogram of Tsar Nicholas II embroidered in gold thread within a border of sequins, threads, cannetille and gilded plaques, edged with gold braid; at the top, three rectangular loops in gilded metal. Signs of wear and very minor losses. Russia, reign of Nicholas II (1896–1917). H. 34.5 x W. 30 cm. History Founded in the 18th century and attached to the Imperial Guard cavalry, His Majesty’s Hussar Regiment occupied a prominent place in the Russian military imagination: it was quartered at Tsarskoye Selo, in close proximity to the imperial residence, and formed one of the most prominent corps in dynastic ceremonial. Under Nicholas II, whose name it bore as ‘His Majesty’s’ regiment, its scarlet and gold uniform transformed the military role into a display of power. The sabre scabbard, suspended from the belt, is thus less a mere piece of equipment than a symbolic artefact: its red fabric, its gold embroidery and the Tsar’s crowned monogram inscribed the rider’s figure within a visual language of loyalty, prestige and closeness to the crown. A true textile fragment of imperial splendour, it bears witness to that courtly culture in which ornamentation, uniforms and heraldry made the military parade a living image of the Empire.
