ALEXANDER JUBILEE FLAG RIBBON AWARDED TO THE ARKHANGELOGOROD INFANTRY REGIMENT IN 1838 Jubilee flag ribbon of the Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky, made of scarlet moiré silk on a thick fabric backing, with both ends trimmed with a double gold fringe 3 verkh (13.32 cm) long. The whole is embroidered with gold thread (oxidised); the bow is adorned with the date “1838 года”; the main face is embroidered with the regiment’s genealogical inscriptions in Cyrillic: “1700 г. Пехотный Дедюта полк” (1700 – Dedyuta Infantry Regiment); on the inside, the military distinction: “1800 г. За взятие французского знамя на горах Альпийских” (1800 – For the capture of a French flag in the Alps), commemorating the battle of 1799 in Switzerland; on the reverse, the name of the unit: “Arkhangelogorod Infantry Regiment”. History This jubilee ribbon of the Order of St Alexander Nevsky was awarded in 1838 to theArkhangelsk Infantry Regiment pursuant to the imperial decree of 25 June 1838 signed by Tsar Nicholas I, who established this type of distinction for the first time. Indeed, any army regiment that had existed without interruption for one hundred years or more was to receive a jubilee ribbon of the Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky, made of scarlet moiré silk and embroidered with the regiment’s history and its military honours. The Arkhangelsk Infantry Regiment was formed on 25 June 1700 by General Prince Repnin in the towns of the lowlands, from recruits, under the name of the Alexei Dedyuta Infantry Regiment. On 10 May 1708, it definitively adopted the name Arkhangelsk. Subsequently, the regiment took part in the wars against the Turks, the Polish campaign and the war against Sweden. The inscription on the ribbon, “1800 г. За взятие французского знамя на горах Альпийских” (For the capture of the French flag in the Alps), commemorates a battle during the Swiss campaign of 1799. Tsar Paul I entrusted General Alexander Suvorov with an army of 21,000 men to cross the Alps from northern Italy and join the Russian-Austrian forces in Switzerland against the French. After crossing the St Gotthard Pass and the Schöllenen Gorges, the Russian troops reached the Linth Valley, where the Battle of Linth took place. It was during these engagements that the regiment captured a French flag, two cannons and hundreds of prisoners. The campaign concluded with a retreat towards Graubünden via the Panis Pass.
