Description
Flag or standard finial of the Guard, 1799 model, in chiselled and openwork gilded bronze, decorated with the cipher of Paul I of Russia beneath the crown of the Order of Malta surmounted by the Russian imperial crown; the conical socket has eight bevelled sides. Reign of Paul I, 1799–1801. H. 24.5 cm. Note The flagstaff ferrules for army flags bore only one crown, that of the Russian Empire. A Cossack source also states that the ferrule with two crowns was used on the flags presented to the Black Sea Cossacks in 1801.
