Description
St George’s ribbon from a flag or standard of the Imperial Army, ending at one end with a tassel made of silver thread trimmings, with silver, orange and black fringes; the second tassel at the other end is missing. Signs of wear, losses and damage; sold as is. Russia, 1883–1896. L. 380 cm (approx.) x W. 4.4 cm. History On the flags and standards of St George from the late 19th century, a knot was made using a ribbon of the Order of St George, accompanied by a cross of the Order of St George, 3rd class. This ribbon was tied around the ferrule (or ferrule ring) at the tip of the flagpole. In 1896, with the adoption of new flagpole tip designs, this arrangement was discontinued. It was not until 1912 that the ribbons were reinstated on all St George’s flags and standards awarded between 1883 and 1912. They were then prescribed to be 4.44 cm (1 vershok) wide, 213 cm long, and finished at each end with a silver tassel 14 cm long.
