Description
Rectangular silver cigarette case, 84 zolotniks (875 thousandths), the lid bearing the interlaced ‘KL’ monogram in gold; engraved on the reverse is a dedication in Cyrillic: “From Lieutenant-General Gontcharov and from the comrades in the General Staff of the Finland Military District, 1898”, with a match compartment (scraper missing) and a compartment for tinder (missing). The lid is difficult to open and close. St Petersburg, circa 1898. Silversmith: probably Grigori ARSENEV. L. 10 x W. 6.5 x H. 1.5 cm. Weight: 198.1 g. Provenance Presented by Lieutenant-General Stepan Ossipovich Goncharov (1831–1912) to a staff officer in 1898. History The general in question is almost certainly Stepan Ossipovich Goncharov (1831–1912), a senior officer in the Imperial Russian Army who at that time held the highest military posts in Finland. Between 1897 and 1898, he notably held command of the Finnish military district, prior to the arrival of General Bobrikov, a leading figure in Russian politics in the Grand Duchy. The date 1898 corresponds precisely to a period of transition within the Finnish military command, suggesting that this case was presented as a commemorative or farewell gift to an officer on the General Staff.
