Miniature sabre scabbard from the Grodno Hussars Regiment of the Imperial Guard, made of 84 zolotniks (875 thousandths) silver, with finely chiselled decoration and the monogram of Tsar Nicholas II centred on a red fabric background, the reverse engraved with the signatures of the regiment’s officers, including that of Count Grabovsky, Princes Argoutinsky-Dolgoroukov I and II, and Prince Mikhail Alexandrovich Nakashidze, amongst others, and featuring a tilting tripod base, the inside of which is engraved with the dedication in Cyrillic: “Lunch in honour of Colonel V.A. Folbort on 9 October 1898’ with the menu ‘Vodka aperitif, game purée, turbot, “Marshal” cutlets, saddle of wild goat, artichokes, ice cream, coffee, liqueurs / Music: The Colonel’s March, Strauss’s Waltz, Bizet’s Carmen, Kniazminsky’s Rodosto”. Provenance Presented by the Grodno Hussars Regiment of the Imperial Guard to Colonel Vladimir Alexandrovich Folbort (Russia, 1859–Paris, 1933) in 1898. History This type of luxurious and decorative object was traditionally presented by the Grodno Hussars upon the departure of a member of the regiment. This is a prestigious gift intended for Colonel Vladimir Alexandrovich Folbort, as evidenced by the remarkable quality of its craftsmanship. An officer in the cavalry of the Russian Imperial Guard, trained at the Nicholas Cavalry School, Folbort was promoted to colonel in 1896. His service in the Grodno Guard Hussars placed him within an elite unit of the Tsar’s army, which was made up of officers from the Empire’s leading aristocratic families, such as the Princes Argoutinsky-Dolgoroukoff and Nakashidze. He subsequently retired with the rank of Major-General and, after the Revolution, emigrated to France, where he died in Paris in 1933.
