Description
Russian School, c. 1840–1843. Portrait of Baron Alexander Andreyevich Fredericks (1778–1849), in the uniform of Chief of Staff of the 2nd Grenadier Division. Oil on canvas. Minor losses, relined. In a fine gilded and stuccoed wooden frame with rocaille decoration featuring shells and palmettes at the corners. H. 63 x W. 48.5 cm. Frame: H. 84 x W. 71 cm. History Baron Alexander Andreyevich Fredericks (1778–1849) took part in the Persian campaigns of 1826–1827 and was awarded a gold sword ‘For Valour’ in the fight against the Turks (1829). A colonel in the Izmailovsky Regiment, he was appointed aide-de-camp to Emperor Nicholas I on 6 January 1826. He distinguished himself during the Polish uprising of 1831 and, following that campaign, was promoted to Major-General in His Majesty’s retinue on 6 December 1831, and was granted lands in Poland in perpetuity and by right of inheritance. He subsequently became Chief of Staff of the 3rd Infantry Corps, then Chief of Staff of the 2nd Grenadier Division. Promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general on 10 October 1843, and subsequently appointed commander of the 2nd Grenadier Division, he died whilst on active service in January 1849. Here he is wearing the uniform of Chief of Staff of the 2nd Grenadier Division, and is wearing the following decorations: - Order of St Vladimir, 4th class (1827), - Order of St George, 4th class (1828), - Polish Order of Virtuti Militari, 3rd class (1832), - Order of St Stanislaus, 1st class (1834), - Badge of Distinction for 20 years of impeccable service, - Order of Saint Anne, 1st class (7 September 1839), with the Imperial Crown (12 August 1840), Medal ‘For the Persian War’, Medal ‘For the Turkish War’, Order of the Lion of Zähringen, Commander’s Cross (1827), Order of the Lion and the Sun, 3rd class (1829), Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, with plaque (1835).
