K. B. BLINSKY, 20th-century Russian émigré school. Portrait of Major-General Dimitri Petrovich Sazonov (1931). Oil on canvas, signed in Cyrillic “K. B. Blinsky”, localised and dated in French “1931 / Paris” in the top right-hand corner. Minor restoration. In a modern stuccoed wooden frame. H. 65 x W. 54 cm. Frame: H. 78 x W. 68 cm. Provenance ‘Russian Art & History’ auction, Lombrail-Teucquam, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 15 November 2007, lot 245 (sold for €2,350). History Major General Dimitri Petrovich Sazonov (Kamenskaya, 1868 – Casablanca, 1933), commander of the Atamansky Regiment of the Life Guards of His Imperial Highness the Heir Apparent, Tsarevich Alexis, is depicted here in a three-quarter left-facing bust, in the regiment’s full dress uniform, wearing all his military decorations. He is also shown holding his kilij, a sabre of Turkish origin specific to the regiment of which he was the commander, decorated with the Cross of St George on the hilt. He was awarded this for a feat of arms on 16 August 1914 near Novoradomsk, which brought the German attacks to a halt. Dated 1931, this portrait was commissioned by the regiment’s association in the context of Russian emigration.
