A PAIR OF BLANK SERVICE BOOKS FOR REPORTS AND OPINIONS, PRESENTED BY EMPRESS ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA TO THE OFFICERS OF HER MAJESTY THE EMPRESS’S 5TH REGIMENT OF ALEXANDRIAN HUSSARS. Published by the V. Berezovski Society, Commissioner for Military Educational Institutions, Petrograd, 14 Kolokolnaya Street, 1915, 16 pages of text, followed by pages for reports and opinions. In-12 format. Both volumes are housed in a black leather case with a strap fastening, stamped with the date 1915 and the monogram of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna; the interior is lined with red fabric and features a pocket. Top and bottom edges gilt. Minor tears, signs of wear. - The first volume bears the stamp of the 6th Squadron of Her Majesty the Empress’s 5th Regiment of Alexandrian Hussars, and features a handwritten ex-libris in Cyrillic: “This book belongs to Vladimir Alexandrovich Petroushevski, cavalry captain, of Her Majesty’s 5th Alexandria Hussars Regiment. This book was a gift from Empress Alexandra Fedorovna to her regiment on 25 December 1915, for the regiment’s officers”. - The second book bears a handwritten bookplate in Cyrillic: “His Imperial Majesty’s Alexandria Hussars Regiment. Cavalry Captain V. V. Breï”. Background - Vladimir Alexandrovich Petroushevski (Moscow, 1891–Sydney, 1961), a military officer from the nobility of the St Petersburg region. He served in the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), took part in the First World War, and subsequently fought in the Civil War in 1917, notably in the Russian Far East, from where he was evacuated to Indonesia. From 1921, he worked as a volcanologist in the Department of Geology on the island of Java. There he studied Dutch and Malay. He founded the region’s first seismographic station and took part in nearly 280 expeditions dedicated to the study of volcanic areas in Java, Sumatra, Celebes and other islands in Oceania. - Vladimir Vassilievich Brei, known as Walter Georges Bray (St Petersburg, 1886–Menton, 1938), Russian tennis player and officer. Together with his brother Georgiy, he won the Russian doubles championship four times between 1908 and 1911. He was a finalist in the singles on two occasions (1907 and 1909), losing to his brother on both occasions. He served in His Majesty’s 5th Alexandria Hussars Regiment, rising to the rank of staff captain. He took part in the First World War and, during the Civil War, in the White Movement. In 1919, he served in the British forces deployed in the Baltic States. In 1920, he emigrated to the United Kingdom, then to France.
