Eugène Alexandrovich LANCERAY (Morchansk, 1848–Kharkiv, 1886) A Bashkir horseman catching a wild horse. Bronze with a medallic patina, signed “E. LANCERAY” in Cyrillic. Posthumously cast by Susse Frères in Paris. Oval bronze plinth with a bevelled edge at the back, decorated on the front with a frieze depicting a Bashkir man chasing a herd of wild horses, signed “Susse F(rèr)es Ed(i)t(eu)rs Paris”. Plinth: L. 64 cm. Group: H. 35 cm (without the plinth) – 42.5 cm (with the plinth). History The Bashkirs, a turbulent band of Asian horsemen, formed several regiments in 1812 and marched as far as Paris in 1814. As they were still armed with bows and arrows, they were nicknamed the ‘Amours du Nord’ or ‘Amours de l’Armée Russe’ by the French. The horseman catches a horse using his distinctive lasso: a rope attached to a stick. Note his characteristic pointed cap, as well as his straight (movable) sabre and distinctive stirrups.
