Description
A pectoral cross for the clergy, commemorating the Crimean War of 1853–1856, made of bronze. The obverse bears the monograms of Emperors Nicholas I and Alexander II, surmounted by the radiant All-Seeing Eye and the years of the Crimean War: ‘1853–1854–1855–1856’. The reverse bears a quotation from the Book of Psalms: ‘In you, O Lord, we place our hope; may we never be put to shame’. Good condition. With an antique ribbon in the colours of the Order of St Vladimir, worn as a cross. H. 10.1 x W. 5.8 cm. History The cross was established on 26 August 1856, at the same time as the commemorative medal of the same name, to mark the end of the Crimean War (1853–1856) and to celebrate the coronation of Alexander II.
