Berdan I infantry rifle, 1868 model, with a wooden stock, steel fittings, and the barrel engraved on the top with “Кольтовскiй Оружейный заводъ. г. Гартфордъ. Америка. No. / Colt Arms Factory, Hartford”. With its bayonet. Signs of wear. United States, Colt Arms Factory, Hartford, for Russia, circa 1869–1870. L. 186 cm (with bayonet); L. 135.5 cm (rifle only). History This rifle was the first Russian service weapon designed from the outset for a metallic cartridge. Due to a lack of sufficient industrial capacity in Russia, an order for just 30,000 rifles was placed with the Colt factory in Hartford. The first rifle was completed in December 1868 and the main deliveries took place between March 1869 and May 1870.
