Percussion rifle, 1843 model, wooden stock, steel and brass fittings; the lock bears the manufacturer’s mark ‘P.J. MALHERBE LIÈGE’, beneath which is an oval brass plate engraved with the monogram of Tsar Nicholas I. Signs of wear. Belgium, Liège, P.-J. Malherbe workshop for Russia, circa 1843–1846. Serial no.: 66 Length: 116.5 cm. History In order to modernise the armament of its chasseur battalions, Imperial Russia commissioned several gunsmiths in Liège, including P.-J. Malherbe, to produce rifled carbines modelled on the British Brunswick Rifle. Known in Russia as ‘Liège carbines’ (Литтихский штуцер), they are among the first Russian service weapons to feature a percussion mechanism and a rifled barrel.
