Description
Rare EPISCOPAL MITRE in ivory moiré silk with rich floral decoration embroidered in polychrome, the braids decorated with a geometric frieze. The pennants each bear the embroidered coat of arms of a prelate and a motto on the scroll "SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM". Quilted interior (a few tears and signs of use inside). Good condition. In its original tan leather case (wear). Total height: 71cm. Possibly belonging to an Apostolic Prothonotary, or even to one of His Holiness's domestic Prelates, or more surprisingly, to one of His Holiness's Secret Chamberlains. We would like to thank Mr Philippe MAGNE for his research into heraldic blazon.
