Sculpture depicting a prelate from Northern Italy; late 17th century. Wood, 62 x 15 cm
Carved, gilded and partially polychromed wood. A standing figure of a bearded cleric (probably Saint Francis of Paola), dressed in a cassock cinched at the waist with a cord and holding a rosary ending in a cross; a heart-shaped medallion hangs from his chest. A devotional work of provincial origin, attributable to late 17th-century Baroque culture. Severe woodworm infestation with extensive loss of material, particularly on the reverse and at the extremities; the hands and any original attributes are missing; wear, abrasions and alterations to the gilding.
