Matthias Stomer (workshop of) – The Prophet Jeremiah Oil on canvas, 75 x 62.5 cm The painting depicts the prophet Jeremiah in half-length portrait, captured in a meditative and contemplative pose, with his hands clasped in the foreground and his head veiled by a large, light-coloured drape that frames his face, emerging from a dark background; at the top is the inscription ‘HIEREMIA’, an identifying feature consistent with seventeenth-century iconographic tradition. The work belongs to the Northern Caravaggist style prevalent in Naples in the 1630s, characterised by strong luminous contrast, oblique ‘night-light’ illumination, warm flesh tones and intense chiaroscuro effects that model the forms through concentrated, theatrical light. The quality of execution appears good, with careful rendering of the age-marked face, attention to detail in the depiction of the gnarled hands, and a rich application of paint in the illuminated areas; however, certain simplifications in the tonal transitions, a lack of depth in the glazes and a certain uniformity in the background lead us to propose a cautious attribution to the workshop of Matthias Stomer rather than to the artist’s own hand, in comparison with the prototype of the Prophet Jeremiah held at the Capodimonte Museum and Royal Park (inv. Q 1682), which originated from the Sant’Eframo Nuovo complex and entered the royal collections in the early 19th century. The work in question therefore appears to be a replica or workshop variant derived from a known model by the master, probably produced by the fourth decade of the 17th century in the Neapolitan area.
