Description
Giovanni Battista Piranesi – Three engravings from ‘Various Views of Ancient and Modern Rome’ Etching and burin on contemporary laid paper, 12.5 x 18.5 cm A refined early view by Piranesi, which renders the monumental façade of the palace in its original layout, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, with rigorous perspective. The composition, characterised by a strong chiaroscuro effect, is enlivened in the foreground by typical 18th-century ‘macchiette’ (prelates, travellers and passers-by in period costume). Series: Various Views of Ancient and Modern Rome (published from the 1740s onwards). Condition of the sheet: Generous original margins intact beyond the copper engraving line. The 18th-century laid paper shows, when held up to the light, the structural porosity typical of the period and a uniform patina of age. Dimensions including margins: 18 x 25 cm. Dimensions of the engraving area: 12.5 x 18.5 cm
