Description
Philippe Thomassin – The Ascension of Christ – Engraving on contemporary laid paper, 413 x 312 mm This monumental late-Mannerist burin engraving, printed on period laid paper, captures on the plate a complex composition devised by the celebrated Florentine painter Jacopo Zucchi (Iacobus Zucca in.), a learned pupil of Giorgio Vasari and a leading figure in the late 16th-century Roman art scene. The work was engraved and published in Rome by the renowned French engraver and printer Philippe Thomassin (Thomassinus dat, donat, dicatq3), as attested by the inscription “Romae Cú priuil. S. Pont. et supioz licétia”, which confirms that it was printed under the strict supervision of the papal privilege between the end of the 16th century and the very early years of the 17th century. The copy is in good overall condition. The sheet has been trimmed close to the outer edge, whilst the illustration and the text at the bottom remain entirely intact; a vertical centre fold is visible, and it shows natural signs of ageing, including slight and widespread foxing.
