Description
Franz Ertinger – The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen Etching and burin engraving on contemporary laid paper, 490 x 308 mm
This fine 17th-century engraving, executed in etching and burin on contemporary laid paper, depicts with extraordinary dynamism The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen, an iconography closely linked to the biblical account in chapter 7 of the Acts of the Apostles (Act. 7). The work was engraved in Paris in 1683 by the renowned Swabian engraver Franz Ertinger (Franc.os Ertinger Sculp: Parisiis 1683) and subsequently published in Amsterdam by the renowned workshop of Gerard Valck (chez Gerard Valck avec Privilege), bearing the plate number 14 in the lower left-hand corner. From a conservation point of view, the copy is in excellent overall condition. The printing is crisp, fresh and well-contrasted, imprinted on a sheet that retains generous original margins well beyond the edge of the copper plate. The paper shows the natural and slight signs of ageing, confined almost exclusively to the outer edges, including minimal foxing.
